Thai Minister of Justice Visits Phuket Province and Gives Encouragement for Inmates

Phuket, August 4th, 2024— Pol. Col. Thawee Sodsong, the Thai Minister of Justice, embarked on a significant visit to Phuket Province today. His mission was twofold: to provide encouragement to medical personnel supporting dental services for inmates at Phuket Provincial Prison and to address the issue of inmates burdened by debt to the Student Loan Fund.

Dredging Khlong Bang Yai

At 2:30 p.m., Minister Thawee Sodsong, accompanied by key officials, visited Mueang District in Phuket Province. Their purpose was to encourage inmates to participate in volunteer public service activities—specifically, the dredging of Khlong Bang Yai. This initiative aims to prevent flooding during the rainy season by maintaining the canal’s depth. The dredging efforts will ensure efficient water drainage, even during heavy rainfall.

Minister Sodsong emphasized the importance of community service and urged prisoners to prepare for reintegration into society upon their release.

Dental Services for Inmates

Next, at 3:30 p.m., the Minister inspected Phuket Provincial Prison in Thalang District. He observed the operations of the Thalang District Office, which provided ID card services to 50 soon-to-be-released prisoners. Additionally, he visited the medical team supporting dental services under the Dentistry Sharing Happiness Project. Between August 4th and 6th, 2024, doctors and nurses volunteered their expertise, performing wisdom tooth surgeries, extractions, and fillings for 590 inmates. The Phuket Provincial Administrative Organization also contributed a subsidy of 110,000 baht to support this vital initiative.

Education and Vocational Skills

Minister Sodsong engaged with inmates in Zones 3 and 4, encouraging them to focus on personal growth. He stressed the importance of education and vocational skills, ensuring that prisoners gain knowledge and abilities to succeed upon their release.

Muay Thai Training

In a unique gesture, the Minister, along with Mr. Thammawat Wongcharoenyos, President of the Phuket Provincial Sports Association, presented Muay Thai sports equipment to Phuket Provincial Prison. This initiative encourages inmates to utilize their free time constructively by training in Muay Thai—a sport that Thailand promotes as part of its soft power.

Debt Mediation Efforts

Lastly, Minister Sodsong addressed a group of prisoners burdened by debt to the Student Loan Fund. Coordinating with the fund, the Ministry of Justice will mediate the debt situation. On August 14th, 2024, a team of lawyers and representatives from the Student Loan Fund will sign debt mediation agreements with 43 inmates, collectively owing more than 3 million baht.

The Minister’s visit underscores the government’s commitment to rehabilitation, justice, and social welfare.
