Thai Opposition MP Mr. Taopiphop Limjittrakorn from the Move Forward Party called on his social media page to legalize and regulate adult films and sex toys instead of totally banning them in Thailand.
Mr. Taopiphop stated that the government should allow the parliament to deliberate on Section 287 of the criminal code, which currently prohibits adult media and adult toys under a total ban. He emphasized that the proposal aims to “unlock Thailand’s adult industry while maintaining regulations and not promoting complete freedom.”
Mr. Taopiphop’s proposed amendment includes:
- Permitting certain types of adult media with restrictions, including prohibiting access to individuals under 20 years old and banning content with violent scenes such as rape.
- Legalizing sex toys to make sure they meet safety standards, which will be overseen by the Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), to protect users and prevent illegal trading.
Mr. Taopiphop acknowledged that this topic might raise controversy, but he is open to any criticism. He stressed that it is more important to have an open debate to learn about the dissenting opinions.
He also clarified that the proposed amendment will not personally benefit him but sees it as his duty as Thai people’s representative to push societal boundaries through democratic mechanisms and parliamentary discussions.
Thailand’s current ban on adult content sees thousands of websites blocked in Thailand and regular raids on content creators on platforms like OnlyFans, although enforcement generally only happens when material goes viral.
