Phuket’s Biggest Stories From the Past Week: Phuket Suffers Horrific Flooding, and More

The following is our weekly feature in which we highlight the top local stories in our area of Phuket from the past week. The number of stories differs from week to week.

These are chosen and curated by our editorial team and are designed for our readers to get a quick “catch-up” of important stories they may have missed. We publish many stories daily and it is easy to lose track of important events or changes in our area. We do national recaps in a separate article, this is only the top local stories in Phuket and nearby provinces.

They are in no particular order of importance but roughly in order of publishing. These are from Monday, June 24th to Sunday June 30th, 2024.

  1. The body of a Belgian man who went missing after swimming on Saturday (June 22nd) was found at Freedom Beach in Karon on Monday (June 24th).

He was later identified only as Mr. LUVOVADIO, 28, a Belgian national. Rest in Peace.

2. The Phuket Tourist Police apprehended a suspect identified only as Mr. Roman, a 29-year-old Russian national, in Kathu for working illegally.

The arrest came after he advertised paid motorbike riding lessons on Instagram, garnering positive reviews from foreign customers but negative feedback from Royal Thai Immigration officials who say he was not working legally.

3. A dramatic incident unfolded in Phuket Town when a Russian tourist, identified only as Miss Alisa, chased after a bag snatcher on a motorbike.

The thief is still on the run as of the press time. Police are still unable to find them.

4. Phuket Police have reminded the public that trucks with ten wheels or more will be banned on roads in Phuket during rush hours, starting next month from July 1st.

Trucks with more than ten wheels will be banned on every road in Phuket from 6:00 A.M. to 9:00 A.M. and from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. except on Saturday, Sunday, and public holidays. It remains to be seen how well this policy will be enforced, with mixed feedback on social media.

5. A 17 year-old female Russian has sustained leg injuries from a speedboat propeller while swimming near the Patong Beach.

Lifeguards told police that the female Russian was swimming outside the designated safety zone for swimming.

6. Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Suriya Juangroongruangkit announced that heavy rainfall on the night of June 29th, combined with flash floods from the mountains, caused severe flooding in many areas in Phuket.

Over 1,500 people were negatively affected from the floods and cleanup efforts continue as of press time.
