Phuket’s Biggest Stories From the Past Week: Belgian Loan Shark Arrested, and More

They are in no particular order of importance but roughly in order of publishing. These are from Monday, May 20th to Sunday May 26th, 2024

  1. Five Suspects Arrested After Stabbing of British Man in Patong.

This incident has raised concerns about safety on Bangla Road, a popular nightlife destination in Patong.

2. A serene afternoon turned into a scene of emergency when a yacht moored near Lon Island, approximately one nautical mile from Chalong Pier, was suddenly engulfed in flames.

The yacht’s owner, reported to be a foreign national, was successfully rescued from the inferno without sustaining any injuries.

3. A violent altercation occurred in Karon involving a French and a Thai man, resulting in serious injuries due to a sword and knife fight.

The police have not disclosed which individual wielded which weapon. 

4. A tragic incident unfolded as an Indian investor was found murdered in Phang Nga, leading to the arrest of a Pakistani man and his Thai wife.

The deceased Indian man was discovered last week by the roadside in Takua Thung, with a fatal bullet wound to his head. 

5. Two French men have been pronounced dead at the scene after their motorbike crashes into a power pole in Paklok.

The two French men were heading to their accommodation. When they arrived at a curve, the motorbike driver lost control at high speed and the motorbike crashed into a central reservation.

6. A 63-year-old Belgian man was detained at his residence in Soi Mangosteen, Rawai, following the issuance of a search warrant.

He is charged with running an unauthorized pawnshop, conducting a personal loan business without a license, and imposing interest rates exceeding the legal limit.
