On April 20th, 2024, Phuket local media reported a social post from Khao Lampi-Hat Thai Mueang National Park regarding the 15th leatherback turtle natural hatchery of the season in Phang Nga.
Khao Lampi-Hat Thai Mueang National Park and Phuket Marine National Park Operations Center 2 joined hands to follow the hatching of leatherback turtles after discovering them on April 19th.
There were 30 hatchlings of leatherback turtles that emerged from their eggs at 1:59 AM to 3:20 AM. 34 more were discovered later at dawn and were kept in foster care to be released to the ocean once they were ready.
On the evening of April 19th, a total of 64 leatherback turtles were ready to be released into the ocean. It was reported that there were 131 eggs in total in the natural hatchery with an 80% survival rate and a 94.12% hatching rate.
The hatching took 54 days in total and it was reportedly the last leatherback turtle hatchery of the season.
