Five Bryde’s whales were spotted near an island in the Mu Ko Ang Thong Marine National Park.
Mu Ko Angthong National Park officials told The Phuket Express that on Monday (February 5th) five Bryde’s whales were sighted by a tour boat crew and passengers between Tai Plao Island and Wow Island (Kite Island). The whales were feeding on shoals of small fish.
In the past, Bryde’s whales traditionally entered the national park area every year from January to March. However, the marine ecological system has recovered significantly after Covid-19. Since 2021, more of them are coming into the national park area. Three years ago, park officials found four of them, two years ago they found six of them, and last year they found four of them.
The Bryde’s Whale is a rare to almost extinct aquatic mammal. The Bryde’s Whale has been listed as a protected animal in Thailand. The presence of the Bryde’s Whale is also seen as an indicator of plentiful marine resources.
