Leonid Meteor Shower to be Visible This Weekend Across Thailand

National—

On November 15th, 2023, the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) publicly announced that a Leonid meteor shower would occur from the evening of November 17th until the early morning of November 18th, 2023.

The Leonid meteor shower, which takes place annually between November 6th and November 30th, will peak after midnight on November 17th, 2023, around 01:00 AM until dawn on November 18th, 2023.

The maximum rate of falling meteors will reach up to 15 per hour.
For clear astronomical observation, it is advised to view Leonid in dark places with the naked eye. These meteors will appear as bright streaks of light passing through the sky, visible without the need for telescopes.

The Leonid meteor shower originates from the dust particles of the Tempel-Tuttle comet, which orbits the sun every 33 years. As Earth passes through the comet’s orbit, it attracts residual debris into its atmosphere, causing spectacular meteor displays, earning the title “King of Meteor Showers”.
