In a late afternoon press conference on Monday, August 21st, 2023, Thailand’s Caretaker Digital Economy and Society Minister Chaiwat Thanakamanusorn stated that his ministry is planning to seek a court order to shut down Facebook in Thailand for allegedly failing to take action on numerous scams, frauds, and fake ads created by user
Anntonia Porsild, 26, a Thai – Danish woman, was crowned Miss Universe Thailand 2023.
Anntonia will represent Thailand at the Miss Universe competition in El Salvador in November this year.
3. Thai Police on Friday, August 18th, announced a successful apprehension of an American-Thai couple, believed to have been operating what the authorities said was the largest online escort service and sex agency website in Thailand, tailor-made for a foreign clientele.
The website was found to have specifically catered to foreign customers, with 80 prostitutes working for the site, covering various locations in Thailand including Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and Hua Hin.
4. Thaksin Shinawatra, Thailand’s former prime minister, returned home on Tuesday, August 22nd, after spending 17 years in self-imposed exile under a looming prison sentence.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday, August 22nd, slapped Thaksin Shinawatra, the ex-premier of Thailand, with an 8-year jail term following his homecoming from exile.
Thaksin Shinawatra, the jailed former Prime Minister of Thailand, was urgently transferred to Police General Hospital from Bangkok Remand Prison around 15 minutes before 1 AM on Tuesday, August 22nd, following development of his health conditions.
Thaksin remains in a prison hospital as of press time with various factions arguing for and against his release or pardon.
5. Srettha Thavisin, the Prime Ministerial candidate from the Pheu Thai Party, has won the bicameral vote in Thai Parliament to become the country’s next prime minister.
The new Prime Minister of Thailand, Srettha Thavisin, met with the outgoing Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha at the Government House, while members of the parliament officially acknowledged the royal command appointing Mr. Srettha the 30th Prime Minister.
Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has chaired his final meeting with the Defence Council, appearing in good spirits as he bid them farewell. The outgoing premier also allowed group photos to be taken with reporters.
