No Plans to Stop Allowing Migrant Workers, Says Thai Government

National —

Thailand will still hire migrant workers, Mrs. Kanchana Phatrachok, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said in response to previous false reports that the country would stop allowing Cambodian and Laotian workers to work in the country.

Mrs. Kanchana said the Ministry of Labor only adjusted the process of hiring migrant workers through MOUs (Memorandum of Understanding) with Cambodia and Laos to make it easier for employers to submit their demands for migrant workers.

Employers can now directly request for migrant workers with the Provincial Employment Offices or Employment Service Centers in Bangkok, without the need to approach the Department of Employment. This did not mean that Thailand would stop hiring workers from the neighboring countries, Mrs. Kanchana said.

She added that for labor from Myanmar, it is still necessary to contact the Department of Employment, however.

Her clarification is also in response to another piece of false news that the Move Forward Party, the political party that won the election, would repatriate migrant workers from neighbouring countries.

Mrs. Kanchana also mentioned the issue of welfare for foreign workers in Thailand, stating that the country has been making continuous efforts to ensure the well-being and protection of foreign workers without discrimination.

Foreign workers who comply with the law are now able to access healthcare services in Thailand, particularly those who are entitled to social security and health insurance benefits, she said.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Labor, there were a total of 2,743,673 foreign workers in Thailand, accounting for 6.92% of the total workforce. These foreign workers play a significant role in the development of the Thai economy and society, Mrs. Kanchana stated.
