A group of cannabis supporters announced that they will celebrate the so-called Thai Cannabis Day in front of the Parliament on June 9th.
Secretary-General of the Thai Cannabis Network Mr. Prasitchai Nuan revealed to Thai media that the event to commemorate the Thai Cannabis Day will take place at the Office of the Public Sector Development Commission, located across from the Government House in Bangkok.
The objective of the event is to educate people on the accurate benefits of cannabis, which he said have drifted far away from the truth due to political factors.
The network also invited a representative from the coalition leaders Move Forward Party to attend the event in order to learn from a comparative study on alcohol, cigarettes, and marijuana presented at the event.
This will help those with power determine which tools or legal frameworks are to be used to regulate marijuana usage to utilize its benefits while controlling its drawbacks, Mr. Prasitchai said.
Mr. Prasitchai says his group is strongly against relisting cannabis as a narcotic and wants those pushing for this status to be restored to clearly explain why cannabis is more dangerous than alcohol or cigarettes and scientifically explain how it is more harmful with a peer review process from countries that have already legalized cannabis, like Canada.
Prasitchai and his group say that they are quite sure these questions can’t be answered as they are confident cannabis is safer and has more health benefits than alcohol in particular. Prasitchai also wants political leaders to explain why the Move Forward coalition supports progressive alcohol and expansion of the Thai alcohol industry but is calling for the cannabis industry to essentially be recriminalized and strongly controlled as a narcotic.
June 9th marks the one year anniversary since Thailand decriminalized cannabis. However, full laws to regulate and legalize it have been held up for over a year due to political debate and opposing views on cannabis. The future of cannabis is still unclear and as a result cannabis activists have pledged to ramp up campaigns and educate politicians and the public on cannabis and the positive effects it has for the economy and health.
