Intoxicated Monk Defrocked in Phuket

Phuket –

An intoxicated monk from Khon Kaen was defrocked in Phuket after locals’ complaints.

The Phuket City Police told the Phuket Express that a monk identified only as Thitathamayo, 60, who was a monk in Khon Kaen has been defrocked by the Phuket Provincial Abbot Phra Kru Mettapirom on Sunday (June 4th).

The defrocking came after the Phuket City Police were notified by locals that monk Thitathamayo allegedly was found drinking alcohol and sleeping in front of a local house in Mueang Phuket. He admitted that he drank alcohol and agreed to be defrocked.

Monk Thitathamayo became a monk at a temple in Khon Kaen two years ago. He left the temple after the abbot in Khon Kaen warned him about drinking alcohol and breaking monastery rules.

Drinking alcohol is strictly against the religious code of Buddhist monks in Thailand. Regardless, as we cover below, there have been several incidents of monks behaving badly in Thai media lately.

Intoxicated monks in Mueang Nong Bua Lamphu tested positive with up to 300 milligrams percent of alcohol and have been defrocked. The monks allegedly also sold without permission many items belonging to the temple.

An intoxicated senior monk was caught at a hotel in Sattahip at night on Valentine’s Day (February 14th), after he reportedly skipped out on a 3,000 baht bill at a local restaurant.
