The body of a white male foreigner clad only in black shorts was discovered by a local fisherman at around 12:50 PM today, May 14th, the Phuket Rescue Foundation reported.
It was found floating about 150-200 meters off the Laem Daeng Cliff near Kalim Beach in the Patong sub-district of Kathu district, Phuket. The rescue team went in search of the body and brought it ashore on a rubber boat at Yanui Beach in the Rawai sub-district of Mueang district.
Although the identity of the deceased is currently unknown, rescuers believed that it belonged to an unfortunate Russian tourist, Mr. Iurii Smoian, who had gone missing after being thrown off his boat into Phuket waters by strong waves. The man was reportedly taking a selfie with his friends before things turned disastrous, Rawai Mayor Aroon Solos told The Phuket Express on Saturday, May 13th.
The body was transported to Vachira Phuket Hospital for a thorough examination to determine the cause of death. Phuket authorities are working with the Russian embassy to identify the man as of press time.
