The Thai Democrat Party said it supports sex toy legalization in Thailand, where they are currently illegal, as a controlled item to diminish sex crimes.
Ms. Ratchada Thanadirek, Executive Director of the Democrat Party, revealed that there is a growing demand for sex toys in Thailand although the goods are still considered illegal.
As a result, there have been illegal trafficking of sex toys, leading to lost revenue from uncollected taxes for the government and corruption among certain government officials.
Furthermore, the prohibition of sex toys presents challenges in regulating their quality and safety. Without proper regulation, the sex toys being sold may not meet safety standards, posing risks such as infections to users.
“Sex toys are devices used for relaxation, stress reduction, or sexual stimulation. They can also help improve sexual function for individuals with sexual health issues, and even reduce the transmission of sexually transmitted infections, ” Ratchada pointed out.
Sex toys can also be used to address sex crimes, according to Ratchada. She said in Thailand, the average number of reported cases of sexual assault and sex crimes over a 5-year period is around 4,000 cases per year. However, research found that there may be an estimated 87% of sexual assault cases that go unreported, meaning that there could be as many as 30,000 cases of sex crimes per year in Thailand.
“The Democrat Party supports the legalization of sex toys. This includes advocating for government agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration and the Industrial Product Standards Office to regulate, inspect, and certify the quality of sex toys to ensure user safety. Sex toys should also be categorized as special controlled products under the supervision of state agencies,” Ratchada stated.
Buyers should be over 18 years old, she said.
Thailand is holding a general election in May where they will elect a new government and many issues, like this, could see possible change. TPN notes that some advocate groups are against legalizing sex toys, mostly for religious or moral reasons, concerned that legalization of sex toys could hurt the reputation or image of Thailand.
