Thirty-two Leatherback Sea Turtle Babies Released to Phuket Sea

Thirty-two baby leatherback sea turtles have successfully hatched and headed into the sea in Phuket.

Last night (February 10th) at the Nai Yang Beach in Thalang, the Phuket Governor Narong Woonciew led the release of 32 leatherback baby sea turtles.

The head of the Sirinat National Park Mr. Sorasak Rananan told the Phuket Express that The sea turtle mother laid eggs on December 11th last year at the Mai Khao Beach nearby in Thalang. In total, 108 eggs were found in the nest and 79 are fertile eggs. The eggs were relocated to a safe area at Nai Yang Beach nearby.

Last night, 32 baby leatherback sea turtles successfully hatched from their eggs. Other eggs are still waiting to hatch.

Governor Narong told The Phuket Express, “This is a good sign that nature and the environment in Phuket has improved after the leatherback turtle mother laid eggs on Phuket Beach.”

“We have hopeful plans to host the ‘Expo 2028 Phuket Thailand’ in which the theme is ‘Future of Life : Living in Harmony, Sharing Prosperity’. Releasing baby turtles into the sea shows that Phuket has retrieved back our natural resources,” Governor Narong added.
