The following is our weekly feature in which we highlight the top local stories in our area of Phuket, from the past week. The number of stories differs from week to week.

These are chosen and curated by our editorial team and are designed for our readers to get a quick “catch-up” of important stories they may have missed. We publish many stories daily and it is easy to lose track of important events or changes in our area. We do national recaps in a separate article, this is only the top local stories in the Phuket province.

They are in no particular order of importance but roughly in order of publishing. These are from Monday, August 15th, 2022, to Sunday, August 21st, 2022.

Let’s get started and see what the top local stories were!

1. The Thai-Chinese Hungry Ghost local tradition in Phuket has started.

The Phuket Por Tor (Hungry Ghost) festival began with a parade in Phuket Town.

The annual Thai- Chinese Phuket ‘Hungry Ghost’ or Por Tor festival is held until August 26^th in Phuket Town.

The festival is always a big hit with locals and tourists.

2. A Dutchman was arrested in Phuket after illegally catching fish in the Krabi national park area last week.

This was after national outrage on Thai social media, although many foreign readers were more balanced in their responses.

3. A Phuket police officer has been sentenced to 25 years in jail after shooting a noodle vendor in Patong in February last year, 2021.

Police Corporal Pornthep Channarong, 25, reportedly told the police that he was heavily intoxicated when he went out to celebrate his transfer and reportedly shot vendor Aroon Thongplub.

4. About 80 local massage vendors in Phuket protested at the Phuket City Hall complaining about massage shops that were allegedly being invested in by foreigners operating with much lower prices, hurting their business.

The Phuket Vice Governor Arnuparp Rodkwan Yodrabam told The Phuket Express, “We will find a solution for this issue as soon as possible and check the massage shops to see if they are compliant.

5. The Phuket Tourist Police has issued a warning about rental vehicles without a proper driving license.

The order is aimed at people driving motorbikes and cars without a proper Thai or international driver’s license specifically for that vehicle.
