Phuket cop sentenced to 25 years in prison after shooting noodle vendor in Patong in 2021

Patong, Phuket –

A Phuket police officer has been sentenced to 25 years in jail after shooting a noodle vendor in Patong in February last year, 2021.

Police Corporal Pornthep Channarong, 25, reportedly told the police that he was heavily intoxicated when he went out to celebrate his transfer and reportedly shot vendor Aroon Thongplub.

Today (August 16th) the Phuket Provincial Court has read the judgment and agreed that the defendant, Pornthep, intended to kill another person. The punishment is 33 years and four months in prison.

The defendant must pay compensation to the victim within 20 years for the total of 7,992,500 baht.

However the defendant has provided good cooperation to the court. The punishment has been decreased to 25 years and four months in prison with a 1,000 baht fine and to pay compensation to the victim of 7,992,500 baht.

TPN media noted the victim has become permanently disabled after the incident and is unable to walk.
