Wellness Tourism is expected to recover and grow globally by 20.9 percent after the Covid-19 pandemic, estimated to exceed 1 trillion USD by 2024, according to Global Wellness Institute’s (GWI) reports.
The GWI reports will also bring hope to Thailand’s tourism recovery as the country has a high potential to become internationally recognized as the center of Wellness Tourism, Dr. Tanupon Wirunhakarun, Chief Operating Officer and Director of BDMS (Bangkok Dusit Medical Services) Wellness, stated.
The Director also mentioned previous tourism rankings that Thailand was selected as the world’s 2nd best Wellness Destination by the GWI and the World’s 4th Most Visited Destination by Visa Global Travel Intentions Study. Koh Samui was also ranked 4th ‘Best Islands’ by DestinAsian Magazine.
Dr. Tanupon said: “We want the BDMS Wellness Clinic to become a business model for health and leisure tourism that will drive the domestic economy after the end of the pandemic because we strongly believe that Thailand has the potential to promote itself as the center of wellness tourism.”
“However, this requires cooperation from everyone, all departments and all parties, including entrepreneurs, academics, public, landlords, local residents, and – most importantly – the government sector. Various policies must concord with one another in order to drive our country to attract larger groups of tourists who aim to receive better health improvement, both physically and mentally.”
He continued that Health Tourism tourists would spend 58 percent more than other types of tourists, averaging 5-6 thousand baht per visit. In order to become a Wellness Tourism, Thailand must have a strong ‘Medical’ basis before developing ‘Wellness’ features.
Ariya Prasarttong-Osoth, president of Celes Samui resort, said that Celes Samui resort has also joined the BDMS Wellness’ vision to expand the wellness clinic on Samui island. The resort has provided treatment, certified by the Ministry of Public Health, for both hotel guests and walk-in customers to support Wellness Tourism.
The treatment includes 1.) Preventive Check-up, 2.) Vitamins, Minerals, Hormones and Antioxidants tests, 3.) Telomere Length tests to establish biological age, 4.) Genetic tests, 5.) Natural Killer (NK) Cell Activity tests, 6.) IV Vitamin drip, 7.) Personalized exercise programs, 8.) Mental wellness program, 9.) Weight control program, and 10.) Sleep wellness program.
