Phuket’s biggest stories from the last week: Foreigners complain about alleged visa fraud, Tourist arrivals increase, and more

We do national recaps in a separate article, this is only the top local stories in Phuket province.

They are in no particular order of importance but roughly in order of publishing. These are from Monday, June 27th, 2022, to Sunday, July 3rd, 2022.

Let’s get started and see what the top local stories were!

  1. Multiple news outlets have reported an estimated 100 foreigners in Phuket have allegedly been defrauded by a visa agency. Phuket police and immigration officers inspected a visa company in Koh Kaew and Wichit, Mueang Phuket that was accused by multiple foreigners of alleged fraud.

The Phuket City Police Chief Colonel Sarawut Chooprasit told The Phuket Express, “We have already identified the prominent owners in the company. They are being called for questioning.”

2. About 7,000 tourists arrived and departed at the Phuket International Airport each day last month but more international tourists are expected to be coming to Phuket after the unpopular Thailand pass program was canceled, says a top Phuket airport official.

The Director of the Phuket International Airport Mr. Monchai Tanod told the Phuket Express, “We have seen roughly a ten percent increase in international tourists after the Thailand Pass program was ended from July 1st.”

3. More than 1.7 million Thai and foreign tourists have visited Phuket which has generated millions of baht in the past five months.

The Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand Phuket Office Ms. Nathasiri Ronnasiri told the Phuket Express, “From January 1st to May 31st this year, there are in total 1,733,119 Thai and foreign tourists who visited Phuket.”

4. The Phuket Governor has asked people in Phuket to be a good host as Phuket is being considered as a candidate for Expo 2028.

This month the BIE (Bureau of International Des Expositions) committee will come to Phuket to see if Phuket is ready to host the event.

5. Phuket Surf X Beat Series 2022 was held in Patong over the past weekend under the Pride Month theme.

The event was officially opened on Rainbow Road in Patong on June 25th.
