Phuket –

A young and reportedly weak sperm whale is being searched for by relevant authorities after it was found stuck in sea garbage Thursday (June 16th) near Racha Island in Phuket.

A video clip was posted by a fisherman on his Facebook Thursday (June 16th) with a message that read, “This young and weak sperm whale was found stuck in sea garbage near Racha Island.”

The person who posted the message has been identified as Mr. Pongsakorn Naksaard, who was on a boat fishing when he found the whale. He reported the incident to the Phuket Marine Office immediately but the sperm whale had later disappeared from the location he originally found it at.

Doctor Kongkiat Kittiwatanawong, Chief of the Phuket Marine Biological Centre (PMBC) told The Phuket Express, “Last year we rescued a young injured sperm whale which was lost from its mother. The young sperm whale was released back into the sea near Racha Island. It might be the same one. We hope we find it soon so we can conduct a physical examination.”
