A confirmed case of Monkeypox infection was found having transmitted through Thailand, waiting for a transit flight to Australia at the International Airport, the Department of Disease Control reported this afternoon, May 30th.

Dr. Chakrarat Pittayawonganon, Director of the Department of Epidemiology under the Department of Disease Control, revealed that the confirmed case of Monkeypox had a traveling history of transiting at the airport in Thailand last week for two hours before departing for Australia.

According to the disease investigation, 12 people were reportedly at risk, who were mostly passengers and crew on the airline. All of them are currently under follow-up for initial symptoms but none of them have reports of suspicious symptoms so far. They will remain under watch for a total of 21 days, which is the disease’s incubation period.

On Sunday, May 29th, the Department of Disease Control had clarified three reported suspected cases of monkeypox as “herpes”. Two more infections were found in Phuket, also confirmed as herpes, and all of them are now being treated at Bamrasnaradura Infectious Diseases Institute.

All doctors are now advised to report a patient with suspicious symptoms related to Monkeypox to the Ministry of Public Health to have the suspected cases examined and confirmed by the relevant authorities.

Meanwhile, a leading Thai doctor has explained monkeypox and why the public should be aware but not panic.
