The Thai Ministry of Tourism and Sports is planning on building a new medical plaza and sports complex for foreign athletes in Phuket.
Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports, told TPN today that the Thai government has allocated millions of baht to renovate the area at Ban Tha Chat Chai, Mai Khao sub-district, Thalang District, Phuket, as a medical plaza. This area belongs to the Ministry of Tourism and is approximately 55 acres in size. The purpose is to develop Phuket into a world-class health tourism city.
Another project, the minister said, is a new sports facility which will also be constructed at Ban Tha Chat Chai in the area of 94 acres. According to the minister’s plan, sports field comprising a tennis court, a volleyball court, and a swimming pool will be constructed as well as a convention center with a capacity of 5,000-10,000 people.

Once finished, the medical plaza will attract people from all over the world to receive unique medical care in Phuket while the sports facility will bring in international athletes to come and train, said the minister. However, the sports complex needs a significant budget increase and still has not received an allocation yet.
